You can add your favorite essential oil to them for aromatherapy benefits. I use doTERRA.
Here’s a quick list of the supplies you’ll need…
- Loofah Sponge
- Clear Glycerine Base Soap
- Gel Food Coloring
- doTERRA Essential Oils – Lemon and Lime
- Silicone cupcake pan
- Sharp knife
- Optional Shrink Wrap
I’ve included Amazon links above so you can use the exact supplies I used to make these. I love, love, love ordering all my craft supplies and having them delivered right to my door. Oh, and I can shop in my pajamas at midnight…ha! I hope the supply links help you.
Loofah Sponges have been a part of my life forever! Growing up near Tarpon Springs {The Sponge Capital…ha!} I always had sponges of all shapes and sizes.
The funny thing is that these sponges aren’t grown in the water! They are from a vine!!! You can buy seeds right here and grow your own. My mom did it and they grew like crazy. They grow like cucumbers and get a brown outer layer that is easily pulled off to leave a pretty sponge. You should try it!
So, now that you know a bit more about these Loofah Sponges we can move on to the first step.
Cut thin slices of sponge with a sharp knife. You’ll end up with a bunch no matter how you cut it.
-
I used a silicone cupcake pan…they fit perfectly.
-
Cut your soap into small squares and melt it in the microwave using a large glass bowl or measuring cup. I start with it set on high and stir it every 30 seconds until it’s melted.
-
Then add a drop at a time of your food coloring until it’s the right color. Stir it in until the color is smooth.
-
For every cup of soap I add a couple drops of doTERRA Lemon or Lime. doTERRA Essential Oils are strong, so you might need 6-8 drops of other brands to have the same effect.
-
Mix well.
-
Start by pouring a little in each section to coat the bottom. Then push the sponge down into it. You can set something on top of them if they float. Let that cool for 10 minutes. It will help hold them in place.
-
You’ll need to melt your soap before you use it again. Just try to keep it to a minimum stirring after 30 seconds. You want it just hot enough to be melted.
-
Now you can fill up the mold to cover the soap. They should stay in place pretty good but you might have one that floats a bit. It’s all good.
Let them cool overnight on the counter or put them in the refrigerator for a couple hours. Whatever works for you!
You can wrap them individually with shrink wrap, but you should wait a day to that or they could be sticky.

One more thing…
If you are making a beachy gift you might want to use Lavender Essential Oil. It helps with sunburns…woot!
Have fun with these!
